Biography

Grant Mayfield, a Liese Ridgeway Vanatta and Richard Chesney scholar is afirst year city/county management fellow in the University of Kansas MPA program. A seventh-generation Kansan, Grant grew up in Johnson County and started his career in local government at the age of 14 as a concession stand worker for Lenexa public pools. He is an alumnus of Saint Louis University in St. Louis, MO, graduating with a degree in political science and communication in 2018.  After graduation, Grant spent a year working in financial and corporate communication consulting in New York City before returning to his home state in 2019. Since then, he has worked as a lobbyist and committee watcher in the Kansas legislature on behalf of the Kansas Sierra Club and managed several successful state legislative campaigns based in Johnson County.  Grant also works actively on research and organizing projects related to immigrant rights, policing accountability and government transparency. He is the current Research Chair of the Advocacy and Awareness Group: Johnson County and a co-founder of Safe and Welcoming Roeland Park.
